Reflecting on 2023: Celebrate a Milestone Year With Us

2023 has been a landmark year for FA-MLI Inc., marked by significant achievements and strides in our mission to empower youth and honor cultural legacies. As we look back, we are filled with gratitude for the milestones we’ve reached and the support that has made them possible, including a substantial $100,000 grant from the Snap Foundation.

Malcolm X Boulevard Dedication: A Tribute to a Legacy

This year, we celebrated the profound impact of Malcolm X with a dedicated sign on Crenshaw Boulevard and a festival in his honor. The co-naming of Crenshaw Boulevard as Malcolm X Boulevard was a momentous achievement, symbolizing our commitment to honoring the legacies that shape our community.

The Malcolm X Human Rights Breakfast and the 31st annual Malcolm X Festival & Celebration, which attracted over 200 attendees, were highlights, raising significant funds and bringing the community together to remember and celebrate.  Key Takeaways: Sold out Human Rights Breakfast where Fa-Mli honored NBA Legend Kevin KJ Johnson and Hip Hop Legend Medusa.

Youth Empowerment Programs: Shaping the Future

Expanding Youth Programs: “See a Man, Be a Man”:
In 2023, our flagship youth program, “See a Man, Be a Man,” continued to make significant strides, extending its reach within the Los Angeles community. For another successful year, this program has been offered at LAUSD’s Locke High School in Watts and Amino’s South Los Angeles High School. These expansions reflect our ongoing commitment to mentorship and personal development, providing young men in these schools with the tools and guidance needed for their holistic growth and empowerment.

2nd Annual Youth Conference at Charles Drew:
This year, we also celebrated the successful hosting of the 2nd Annual ‘DA ROOT Mentoring to Save a Generation Conference’ at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. Addressing crucial topics such as trauma and anxiety, the conference aimed to foster a culture of healing among the youth. It stands as a testament to our investment in the well-being and future of young minds.

Neuroscience Education Partnership
FA-MLI Inc. proudly announces our ongoing partnership with Charles Drew University of Medicine & Science on a $5 Million Neuroscience Grant. This collaboration, central to our mission this year, focuses on bringing community-based neuroscience education to the youth we serve. Our goal is to demystify complex neuroscience concepts through accessible programs, enhancing brain health understanding and outcomes. This venture represents a unique convergence of academic research and community engagement, promising exciting developments and opportunities for our community.

Grants & Donors: The Backbone of Our Success

FA-MLI’s impactful work in 2023 has been greatly amplified by the generosity of our donors. A $100,000 grant from the Snap Foundation and a $25,000 contribution from the Squid & Squash Foundation have been instrumental. These grants, which support our aligned missions of empowering underrepresented youth and enriching their lives through education, arts, and community engagement, have fueled our initiatives, enabling us to reach and uplift more young people in the Los Angeles area.

Da Soul of America Tour: A Journey of Learning

Our annual educational trip, Da Soul of America Tour, took participants on an immersive journey through New Orleans. This trip provided a unique educational experience, exposing our youth to the city’s rich history, culture, and arts. It was a powerful testament to our commitment to cultural literacy and experiential learning.

A Question of Culture: Fostering Intellectual Growth and Community Engagement

“A Question of Culture,” held every Tuesday night on Zoom, has become a recent cornerstone of FA-MLI Inc.’s 2023 initiatives, offering a unique social and creative space for older adults in our community. This event, enhanced by the contributions of Tony Wafford and Assatta Umoja, provides an enriching platform for a variety of discussions, encompassing a wide range of topics. Tailored to engage and stimulate older adults, it stands as a testament to our commitment to fostering an environment where knowledge, cultural diversity, and intellectual exploration are celebrated, thereby contributing significantly to the growth and empowerment of our community members.

Harmonizing Mission and Music: Torrence's Original Compositions

This year, Torrence Brannon-Reese, the founder of FA-MLI Inc., extended his creative talents to music, composing original pieces that align with the organization’s ethos. His compositions, such as “See a Man Be a Man,” “Shrimp & Grits,” “New Orleans Da Soul of America,” and “You Know I Love You,” are notable for their blend of various musical styles, reflecting the cultural diversity of the communities FA-MLI Inc. supports.

I’ve Known Rivers Film Festival: A Cinematic Celebration

The I’ve Known Rivers Film Festival was a highlight of 2023, showcasing the rich stories and culture of New Orleans. This event not only brought to light the vibrant cultural heritage of New Orleans but also served as a platform for filmmakers to share their stories, connecting audiences with the heart and soul of diverse narratives.

Verses and Visions: The 2023 CLASSIC PHOTO PROJECT

This year’s Classic Photo Project, held on December 3rd during the I’ve Known Rivers Film Festival opening night gala, spotlighted the essence of black poetry in Los Angeles. It featured a once-in-a-lifetime gathering that paid homage to the poetic keepers of culture, celebrating their artistry and influence within the community.
