Honoring Local Heroes

We are thrilled to announce that among this year’s distinguished honorees is Torrence Brannon-Reese, the visionary founder and CEO of FAMLI Inc. This recognition highlights the profound impact of grassroots initiatives on our community’s youth.

PACE: Empowering Parents, Transforming Communities

The Parent Action Coalition for Education (PACE), founded by Dr. Gloria Zuurveen, has been a driving force in community development since 2002. PACE’s mission focuses on:

– Training parents to advocate for their children’s education
– Promoting social responsibility and character development
– Increasing school attendance and exploring career opportunities
– Offering mentoring and tutoring programs

The PACE Journalism Education Enrichment Program (JEEP)

Proceeds from the GLORY Awards will benefit JEEP, an innovative initiative guiding youth towards careers in STEM Journalism. This program covers crucial areas such as:

– Newsgathering and reporting
– Broadcasting and editing
– Gaming and financial literacy in media

Dr. Zuurveen emphasizes, “Our goal is to drive youth and young adults to careers that blend technology, communication, and community awareness.”

FAMLI Inc.: Nurturing Tomorrow’s Leaders

FAMLI Inc., founded by honoree Torrence Brannon-Reese, has been at the forefront of youth development in South Los Angeles since 1992. Their flagship initiative, the “See a Man, Be a Man” mentoring program, addresses the critical need for positive male role models in communities where 90% of students come from single-parent, female-headed homes.

Sharmon Goodman, Scholars Program Director at One Voice, notes the program’s impact: “Beyond their 100% high school graduation rate, students report stronger family relationships, higher levels of self-dignity and pride, and drastically lower encounters with the justice system.”
