On May 25th, 2024, the Los Angeles community will come together to honor the vibrant spirit and remarkable accomplishments of the Skid Row neighborhood. Fa-Mli Inc., a local nonprofit, is proud to partner with the Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD) to support their annual “Walk the Talk” event – a celebration of the people who live and work in this resilient community.

The festivities will kick off at noon at the Skid Row History Museum & Archive, with a vibrant parade led by Torrence Brannon and his Everything with Soul Band, a talented New Orleans-style brass ensemble. As the parade winds through the streets, the crowd will be treated to dynamic performances recounting the stories of this year’s honorees – a diverse group of community leaders, artists, activists, and service providers who have made extraordinary contributions to improving the lives of Skid Row residents.

“This event is a powerful celebration of the creativity, compassion, and collective spirit that thrives in Skid Row,” said Torrence Brannon-reese. “We are honored to support the Los Angeles Poverty Department in uplifting the voices and narratives of those who make this neighborhood so vibrant.”

Among the honorees are Clancey Cornell, a dedicated volunteer and archivist; Kayo Anderson, the minister of music and artistic development with The Row Church; and Lorinda Hawkins Smith, an actor and advocate against domestic violence. The parade will also feature vibrant portraits of the honorees created by artist Hayk Makhmuryan.

Fa-Mli Inc. is proud to collaborate with LAPD and other local organizations to showcase the resilience and talent of the Skid Row community. Through our youth mentorship programs and community-driven initiatives, we are committed to empowering individuals and fostering positive change in the neighborhoods we serve.

We encourage everyone to join us on May 25th for this inspiring celebration of the Skid Row community. For more information please visit Lapovertydept.org/projects/walk-the-talk.
