We Did It! FA-MLI Honored at LA City Council for Malcolm X Way

May 16, 2025 – A Historic Day

After 30 years of dedication, FA-MLI Inc. was officially recognized by the Los Angeles City Council for our work in making Malcolm X Way a reality!

The Moment We’ve Been Working For

Councilwoman Heather Hutt invited us to City Hall to commemorate Malcolm X’s 100th birthday and celebrate the new street signs along Crenshaw Boulevard. What started as a vision in 1992 is now permanent history in Los Angeles.

What Council Members Said About Our Work

Councilwoman Heather Hutt:
“Malcolm X Way will be more than a street name – it’s a recognition of the profound impact on our community, our city, and our world.”

Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson:
“You guys just pounding and pounding and doing the work to get this done because you recognize the importance of it.”

Torrence Brannon Reese & Andre Parvenu was presented with a certificate recognizing his incredible dedication to this project.

Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez:

“Malcolm X is my number one hero… He was dedicated to learning and reading and always willing to accept new facts and changing his opinion until his very last breath.”

From Dream to Reality

  • 1992: Vision first shared by founder Torrence Brannon-Reese
  • 1993: First Malcolm X Festival at Rancho Cienega Park
  • 30+ years: Consistent community organizing and education
  • 2025: Malcolm X Way officially dedicated on Crenshaw Boulevard

Our Impact Continues

The Los Angeles Malcolm X Festival has been introducing new generations to Malcolm X’s message since 1993. Through programs like our “See a Man Be a Man” mentoring initiative and community education efforts, we keep his legacy of transformation and justice alive.

Thank You

This achievement belongs to our entire FA-MLI family:

  • Our board members and volunteers
  • The 4,000+ petition signers who supported us
  • Community partners who stood with us
  • Councilwoman Heather Hutt and Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson for their leadership
  • Special Recognition: As noted in our 2023 vision statement, this achievement wouldn’t have been possible without key allies like Shaka Satori (African American Legacy Network), our board members, and the thousands of community supporters who signed petitions and stood with us.

As we always say: “Up, up, and never down. Peace, love and soul.”

Malcolm X’s message of growth, learning, and fighting for justice lives on through all of us.
