Come dressed. Come ready to be photographed. Come ready to make history.
On Saturday, May 30th, 2026, FA-MLI Inc. celebrates one of its most enduring and beloved traditions — the Cultural Renaissance Classic Photo Gathering — now entering its 30th year. What began as an intimate gathering of artists and community members in 1996 has grown into a landmark annual celebration of Black artistic legacy in the heart of Leimert Village.
Born from a Jazz Legend’s Inspiration
The Cultural Renaissance Classic Photo Gathering was launched by Torrénce Brannon-Reese on May 18, 1996 at the World Stage Performance Gallery in Leimert Park — inspired by the vision and artistry of Jazz Singing Legend Dwight Trible. Trible’s commitment to using music and culture as a force for community healing and elevation planted the seed for what would become a three-decade tradition of gathering, honoring, and documenting Black artists in Los Angeles.
From that first gathering at the World Stage — itself one of the most storied cultural institutions in Leimert Park history — the event has always carried a simple but powerful purpose: to see and be seen, to honor those who have given their lives to the arts, and to document that legacy for generations to come.
30 Years of Witnessing
Thirty years is not a small thing. In a cultural landscape where Black spaces are constantly under threat from gentrification, displacement, and erasure, the fact that this gathering has continued annually since 1996 is itself an act of resistance and love. Each year, living artists are invited back. New voices deserving recognition are welcomed and honored alongside the veterans. The camera becomes a tool of cultural preservation.
This anniversary edition carries special weight. Many of the artists who appeared in that first 1996 photograph will return. Others who have shaped Leimert Park’s cultural landscape in the years since will stand alongside them — a living document of what community looks like when it refuses to forget itself.
A Milestone Moment in Leimert Village
The 30th Anniversary gathering takes place in front of the Vision Theater on People Street in Leimert Village — one of the most culturally significant corners in all of Los Angeles. This is the same neighborhood where FA-MLI has organized for over 30 years, where the Malcolm X Corridor now runs, and where the work of cultural preservation is not a program — it is a way of life.
