FA-MLI Inc. founder and CEO Torrénce Brannon-Reese, MSW will be honored with a Human Rights Award by the Los Angeles–Lusaka Sister City Committee, in partnership with LAAAW PAC, at their Africa Day Spring Luncheon on Sunday, May 24th, 2026.

This award reflects a career built not in boardrooms, but on the block — in the schools, the streets, and the cultural spaces of South Los Angeles. From his early years leading the LA Bridges Gang Prevention Project for the City of Los Angeles, to his current role as a UCLA-CDU Dana Center Fellow researching the neurological impact of soul music on healing and trauma, Brannon-Reese has consistently placed human rights at the center of his work.

The Africa Day recognition connects directly to that legacy. The Los Angeles–Lusaka Sister City relationship is rooted in international solidarity and Pan-African community ties — values that align deeply with FA-MLI’s 30+ year commitment to Black cultural preservation, youth empowerment, and social justice in Leimert Park and beyond.

From the Malcolm X Corridor to the World Stage

In May 2025, Brannon-Reese led the official unveiling of the Malcolm X Corridor — a five-mile co-naming of Crenshaw Boulevard honoring Malcolm X’s human rights legacy, achieved after 30 years of community organizing. That milestone, supported by Councilwoman Heather Hutt, is the kind of ground-level human rights work that now earns recognition on a broader stage.

This Africa Day award arrives as FA-MLI enters one of its most active seasons — with youth mentorship programs running at BALA and Crenshaw High School, the Spring/Summer 2026 cultural events calendar underway, and the New Orleans “Da Soul of America” Tour planned for October.
