18th Annual Malcolm X Festival

FA-MLI’s 18th Annual Malcolm X Festival of Arts, Culture & Education brought a day of live music, poetry, spoken word, fashion and film to the Leimert Park Black Arts Village, opening at noon with a traditional African libation, with the State of the Race Forum held at the Barbara Morrison Theater.

During the festival, a five-mile section of Crenshaw Boulevard was dedicated in honor of Malcolm X, the result of a co-naming effort Torrénce Brannon-Reese began in 1994. Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove and Councilwoman Heather Hutt addressed the ceremony, held on what would have been Malcolm X’s 98th birthday.
