A Series Built on Living Legends
Legendary Nights was born out of FA-MLI’s conviction that the greatest music ever made — soul, blues, jazz, funk, reggae — deserves to be heard live, in community, across generations. What began as an intimate series at the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center in Leimert Park has grown into one of FA-MLI’s signature cultural programs, drawing veteran musicians, young artists, and community members together under one roof.
Each Legendary Nights event is more than a concert. It is a classroom without walls. FA-MLI youth participants have worked these events as waiters, sound technicians, set designers, stage managers, and production assistants — earning stipends while learning the craft of live performance production from the inside. Culture as education. Music as job training. Community as curriculum.
Everything with Soul — A Band That Lives Its Name
Torrénce Brannon’s Everything with Soul Band is exactly what the name promises. Drawing from the full spectrum of Black American musical tradition — New Orleans second line, classic soul, Chicago blues, Caribbean reggae, bebop jazz — the band delivers the kind of performance that reminds an audience why live music exists in the first place.
For Brannon-Reese, the bandstand has always been an extension of the community work. The same values that drive FA-MLI’s youth programs, the Malcolm X Legacy Project, and 34 years of cultural organizing in South Los Angeles are present in every note — a belief that music heals, connects, and liberates.
Catalina Jazz Club — A Worthy Stage
The Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood is one of Los Angeles’ most storied live music venues — a room that has hosted some of the greatest names in jazz, soul, and blues over its decades of operation. Bringing the Legendary Nights series to Catalina signals FA-MLI’s continued expansion beyond Leimert Park while staying rooted in the cultural mission that defines the organization.
This June 21st performance also follows Street Corner Renaissance’s two spring appearances at Catalina and San Pedro — making 2026 a breakout year for FA-MLI’s musical presence across Los Angeles.
